What a crown is
A crown is a cap that fits over a tooth to restore its shape, strength and appearance. It is often used after a root canal, on a heavily filled tooth or on a tooth that has cracked or worn down.
Zirconia crowns
Zirconia is a strong, tooth-coloured ceramic. Many dentists choose it because it is durable and looks natural. Your dentist will explain which material suits the tooth, depending on its position and how you bite.
What a bridge is
A bridge replaces a missing tooth by joining an artificial tooth to crowns on the teeth either side of the gap. It is one of the options for replacing teeth, alongside implants and removable dentures.
The usual steps
- Examination and X-rays
- Shaping the tooth and taking an impression or scan
- A temporary crown while the final one is made
- Fitting and adjusting the final crown, then bonding it in place
Looking after crowns
Brush and clean between teeth as normal. The tooth under a crown can still decay, so regular check-ups matter.
