What a check-up and cleaning includes
A check-up is a careful look at your teeth, gums, tongue and the lining of your mouth, together with X-rays when they are needed. Professional cleaning, often called scaling and polishing, removes plaque and hardened tartar that brushing at home cannot reach, then smooths the surfaces so they collect less new buildup.
Why it matters
Many dental problems begin quietly. Early decay and gum disease often cause no pain, and finding them early usually means simpler and cheaper treatment. Regular visits also let your dentist watch old fillings and crowns.
What to expect
- A short talk about your health, medicines and any concerns
- An examination, with X-rays if your dentist advises them

- Advice on brushing, flossing and diet that suits you
Cleaning is generally comfortable. If your gums are sore or your teeth are sensitive, tell the dentist so the visit can be adjusted.
How often should I come?
