What a dental implant is
A dental implant is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. After it has fused with the bone, a crown is attached on top, so the new tooth is fixed and does not need support from the teeth beside it.
Who is suitable?
Implants are suitable for many adults who are missing one or more teeth, but not for everyone. Your dentist will check:
- Whether you have enough healthy bone and healthy gums
- Your general health and any medicines you take
- Whether you smoke, since smoking affects healing
The usual steps
- Examination, X-rays and planning
- Placing the implant under local anaesthetic
- A healing period while the implant fuses with the bone
- Fitting the crown or other tooth replacement
The healing period differs between patients, so you will be given a realistic plan for your own case.
Looking after an implant
An implant needs the same care as a natural tooth: careful brushing, cleaning between teeth and regular check-ups.
