Dental Fillings

What a filling does

A filling repairs a tooth that has decay or a small break. The dentist removes the damaged part of the tooth, cleans the area and fills it, restoring the shape and protecting the tooth from further damage.

Composite (tooth-coloured) fillings

Composite is a tooth-coloured material that is bonded to the tooth. It blends with your natural shade, and it often allows the dentist to keep more of the healthy tooth. It is used on front and back teeth, depending on the size and position of the damage.

What to expect

  1. Examination and, if needed, an X-ray
  2. Local anaesthetic so you do not feel the work
  3. Removing the decay and shaping the space
  4. Placing the material in layers and hardening each layer with a light
  5. Checking your bite and polishing

The visit usually takes less than an hour for a single filling. Your mouth stays numb for a few hours, so avoid chewing until the feeling returns.

Do all cavities need a filling?

Very early decay can sometimes be managed with fluoride and better cleaning. Your dentist will tell you honestly whether a filling is necessary.
