Dental Implants in Karachi: Who Is a Candidate, and What to Ask
Losing a tooth changes more than your smile. Chewing becomes harder, the teeth beside the gap can drift, and the bone in that spot slowly shrinks. A dental implant is one way to replace the tooth, and it is often discussed. It is not the only way, and it is not right for everyone.
What an implant is
An implant is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone. Over a few months it fuses with the bone. A crown is then fixed on top, so you have a replacement tooth that does not rely on the teeth next to it.
Who is usually a good candidate
- Adults whose jaw has finished growing
- People with healthy gums, or gums that have been treated
- People with enough bone, or a bone that can be built up
- People who can keep up good cleaning habits
Things that need extra care
- Smoking slows healing and increases the risk of failure.
- Uncontrolled diabetes affects healing. Controlled diabetes may not rule out an implant, but your dentist needs to know.
- Gum disease must be treated first.
- Some medicines affect bone. Tell your dentist everything you take.
The process
- Examination, X-rays and sometimes a 3D scan to measure bone
- A plan that explains the steps and the likely timeline
- Placing the implant under local anaesthetic
- A healing period, which differs for each patient
- Fitting the final crown
Alternatives
A bridge uses the teeth either side of the gap, which must be prepared. A denture is removable and often the lowest-cost option. Each has advantages and drawbacks, and a good dentist will explain all of them, not only one.
Questions to ask before you decide
- Am I a good candidate, and what is that based on?
- What are the steps and the expected time?
- What does the quoted cost include, such as the crown and follow-up visits?
- What are the risks, and what happens if the implant does not take?
- How should I look after it?
Success and longevity
Implants are widely used and often last many years, but no dentist can promise how long yours will last. Cleaning and regular check-ups make a large difference.
