Braces or Clear Aligners? How to Decide

Clear aligners are advertised everywhere, and braces are often described as old-fashioned. The truth is less simple. Both can work well, and which is better depends on your teeth and on you.

How each works

Braces use brackets fixed to the teeth and a wire that gently moves them. They are worn all the time and adjusted by the dentist at regular visits.

Clear aligners are a series of transparent, removable trays. Each one moves the teeth a little, and you change to the next one after a set time.

The commitment

Aligners only work if you wear them for most of the day, usually around twenty to twenty-two hours. If you often forget, braces might be the more reliable choice. With braces, careful cleaning is the challenge, because food collects around brackets and wires.

Cost and time

Costs and treatment times vary a lot between cases and clinics, so the useful question is what is included: the records, all the adjustments, the retainers and any extra work. Ask for a clear estimate in writing before you start.

The step everyone forgets: retainers

Teeth tend to drift back after treatment. A retainer, fixed or removable, is normally needed, perhaps for years. Make sure it is part of your plan.

Questions to ask

Treat gum problems and decay first

Teeth with active decay or gum disease should be treated before any straightening starts.
