Zirconia Crowns: When You Need One and What to Expect

If your dentist has said you need a crown, it can sound like a big step. In fact a crown is a simple idea: a cap that covers a damaged tooth so you can keep using it. Here is what that involves, and what is special about zirconia.

When a crown is recommended

What is zirconia?

Zirconia is a strong ceramic. Crowns made from it are tough and tooth-coloured, and many dentists use them for both front and back teeth. Other materials are also used, such as metal-ceramic and other ceramics, and the best choice depends on the tooth, your bite and your budget. Your dentist should explain the options.

The steps

  1. Examination and X-ray to check the tooth and roots.
  2. Preparing the tooth. Under local anaesthetic, the tooth is reshaped to make room for the crown.
  3. Impression or scan of the tooth, used to make the crown.
  4. Temporary crown to protect the tooth while the final one is made.
  5. Fitting. The dentist checks the colour, fit and bite, then fixes the crown permanently.

This normally takes more than one visit.

Will it look natural?

A good crown is matched to the shade of your neighbouring teeth. Tell your dentist if the colour matters to you, and check it at the fitting before the crown is cemented.

How long will it last?

Crowns can last many years, but nobody can promise exactly how long. It depends on the tooth, your habits and your care.

Bridges

A bridge uses crowns on the teeth either side of a gap to hold an artificial tooth between them. It is one option for replacing a missing tooth, along with implants and dentures.
